NEW!  Woodridge ‘Sets the Bar’ for Community Pantries  USDA visit Pantry, Feb 2010

The Woodridge Community Pantry was proclaimed as “setting the bar” for community pantries by a USDA executive during an official visit last week.

The esteemed group, visiting from Washington D.C., was there to assess the pantry’s Emergency Food Stamp Program. Among the group were Lisa Pino, USDA Deputy Administrator for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program); Audrey Rowe, USDA Deputy Administrator for Special Nutrition Programs; Susan Holzer, USDA Midwest Region Chief for SNAP; Alan Rebok, Bureau Chief of the Illinois Department of Human Services; and Elizabeth Donovan, Agency Services Director for Northern Illinois Food Bank.

The Woodridge Community Pantry made an overwhelming positive impact on the USDA executives. Audrey Rowe, who oversees the school feeding and government commodities programs, stated she had visited many food banks in her career, but she had never visited a place where clients were treated with such dignity.

Rowe was impressed that the pantry was clean, well-stocked and organized, with items efficiently displayed. She also noted that the pantry offers its clients fresh meat, milk, eggs, cheese, and a large selection of fruits and vegetables.

Additionally, Rowe took time from her busy schedule to work with volunteers, including fulfilling an order and assisting staff at a client table. When leaving, she complimented all present, and told them that the Woodridge Community Pantry “set the bar” for pantry operations.

Do you have any experience in marketing? If so, we can use your talents to help with publicity for pantry events.

Have you done grant writing? We are looking for someone who can research and write grant applications for us.

Can you help plan fundraisers and talk with prospective donors?

Do you have experience with Word, Publisher, and Access? We can use your help with our newsletter or database.

If you would like more information, please call the Pantry at 512-9921 or visit our Volunteers page (click the link).

Hours of Operation Increased

Woodridge Pantry volunteers are putting in some overtime to assist clients.  With soaring gas and food prices, the Woodridge Community Pantry has more clients than ever, and are in need of people to volunteer a few hours of their time to accommodate local residents who are struggling.

With the increased number of participants in food programs, the pantry extended its normal hours of operations. Specifically, people are needed to volunteer at the pantry on Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 PM so that clients can be served in a timely manner.

The pantry needs a team of ten persons each Thursday evening. Volunteers can choose to commit every Thursday, or once or twice per month, but arranged times are required to ensure the pantry is properly staffed.

If you would like to learn more about these and other volunteer opportunities at the Woodridge Community Pantry, please call (630) 512-9921 or visit our Volunteers page.

Volunteer opportunities at the Pantry increase.Volunteering Feels Good!

Can you Volunteer an hour or more a week?
